Fishing Derby

Something about the rush of water beckons us to slow down, take a minute on the shoreline, and catch a fish.

Laramie is home to two long-standing fishing derbies. In the warm July heat, the Huck Finn Fishing Derby on July 20th, 2024 brings families to LaPrele Park to try their luck catching trout in the youth stock pond. Kids age 13 and under fish in 4 different age groups, with prizes for first fish, smallest fish, largest, and first to reach their limit. This long-standing Laramie tradition has been going on for over 50 years.

For the hardy fisherman, the Laramie Plains Lions Club Lake Hattie Ice Fishing Derby is the event of the winter season. It usually takes place the first weekend of January, with a small registration fee. Awards are given for the top 5 largest fish as well as the winning smallest fish, with trophies and cash prizes.
